About this pairing
A conjunction is the moment two planets share the same position along the zodiac, the line the Sun, Moon and planets all trace across our sky. Venus shines at about magnitude minus 4 and Jupiter near minus 2, far brighter than any star, so a Venus-Jupiter conjunction is the easiest of all to spot. The two meet a little more than once a year on average, though the spacing wanders because Venus keeps close company with the Sun.
Some of these meetings are strikingly tight, with the pair drawing within a fraction of a degree, while others pass a few degrees apart. The separation column below shows how close each one runs, in degrees or, for the closest, in arcminutes (sixty to a degree).
Because Venus never strays far from the Sun, a Venus-Jupiter conjunction is always a dawn or dusk event, low in the east before sunrise or the west after sunset. A close one in June of 2 BC, when the two all but merged into a single star in Leo, is one of several events that have been proposed as the Star of Bethlehem, although that remains one hypothesis among many rather than an established fact.

Plan around the twilight. A Venus-Jupiter meeting never strays into the midnight sky, so the whole show happens within an hour or two of sunrise or sunset, low over an open horizon; scouting a spot with a clear east or west line of sight matters more than any equipment. Binoculars turn the pair into an event: any pass closer than about five degrees fits comfortably in a standard binocular field, two planets in one circle of sky.
The pair also produces the sky's most reliable case of mistaken identity. In the rare passes closer than about a tenth of a degree the two blend, for most eyes, into a single dazzling light, and every close Venus-Jupiter conjunction brings a fresh crop of reports of a strange brilliant object over the sunset. If a friend asks about the impossibly bright star hanging low in the west, the table above probably has the answer.
Photographing Venus and Jupiter
A Venus-Jupiter conjunction is one of the most forgiving targets a camera ever gets. Both planets are bright enough to register in the few minutes after sunset while the sky still holds color, so even a phone braced on a wall or a low tripod catches them cleanly. The trick is composition rather than equipment: set a recognizable foreground low in the frame, a ridgeline, a rooftop, a bare tree, and let the two planets ride the twilight gradient above it.
For a more deliberate shot, keep the exposure short, roughly half a second to two seconds at a moderate ISO, so the planets stay crisp points instead of swelling into blobs, and reach for a modest telephoto around 100 to 200 millimeters to tighten the pair while still holding the color of the sky. The enemy is glare. Shoot while the scene is still blue or gold rather than fully dark, because blazing Venus begins to flare once the background goes black and the quiet balance of the pairing is lost.
The Star of Bethlehem question
No conjunction carries more historical weight than the Venus-Jupiter meetings. In June of 2 BC the two drew so close in the constellation Leo that to most eyes they merged into a single extraordinarily bright star, and that event is one of several proposed explanations for the Star of Bethlehem. It deserves to be stated plainly as a hypothesis rather than a settled fact: the chronology of the nativity is uncertain, rival candidates including the triple Jupiter-Saturn conjunction of 7 BC have their own supporters, and no sky event can be tied to the account with real confidence.
What the history captures is how commanding a close Venus-Jupiter pass looks, the same impression the pairing still makes on anyone who catches it low over the sunset. The pairing returns a little more often than once a year because Venus is always near the Sun, and the Sun laps slow-moving Jupiter about once a year; as Venus swings out to one side of the Sun and back, it sweeps past Jupiter around each of those passages, now and then twice in a single round. Venus itself comes back to nearly the same place in the sky every eight years, the near-repeat that draws the Venus pentagram; only some of its passes by Jupiter are the tight, unforgettable kind.
